The skies over Caraga were dim and restless on November 3, 2025, as Typhoon Tino loomed over the region.
Yet, for DepEd Caraga Regional Director Maria Ines C. Asuncion, CESO III, and her team from the Regional Office, the day began not with uncertainty but with compassion. Early that morning, RD Asuncion and her delegation were in Bislig City, carrying out the Compassion Project, a mission dedicated to providing care, support, and encouragement to teachers battling serious illnesses.
It was a solemn reminder that leadership is not only found in conference halls but also in the soft-spoken moments of presence, empathy, and human connection.

Despite the emotional weight of the morningโ€™s mission and the approaching storm, the team pressed on to Bayugan City in the afternoon. There, another crucial responsibility awaited: ensuring the regionโ€™s readiness for the upcoming Palarong Pambansa 2026, which Bayugan City will co-host with the Province of Agusan del Sur in the third week of May.
Inside a cozy local cafรฉ, its warm lights offering comfort against the grey afternoon, and later at the Lope A. Asis Memorial Gymnasium, RD Asuncion met with Bayugan City Mayor Hon. Kirk S. Asis. Their discussions centered on logistics, venue readiness, athlete accommodation, medical preparations, and the joint responsibilities that come with hosting thousands of young athletes from across the country.
Supporting RD Asuncion was a multi-disciplinary team that mirrored the layered demands of hosting the Palaro:
Maria Teresa M. Real, Schools Division Superintendent of Bayugan City, ensures local education stakeholders are mobilized and aligned.
Dr. Alejandro P. Macadatar, FTAD Chief, is anchoring planning on monitoring, evaluation, and technical systems of the billeting quarters.
Dr. Violeta C. Nunez, PPTRD Chief, is strengthening policy direction and program standards.
Elaine N. Navarro, Finance Chief, ensures budgetary coherence and fiscal stewardship.
Jumer C. Carlon, MD, Medical Officer IV and Regional Sports Coordinator, championing health, safety, and athlete well-being.
After the meeting, the collaborative effort took a more hands-on turn. The group proceeded directly to inspect the various playing venues and billeting quarters across Bayugan City, ensuring that each site met national standards for safety, comfort, and function. Their final stop returned them to the Lope A. Asis Memorial Gymnasium, the cityโ€™s central hub for major sporting events. There, amid the vast indoor space that will soon echo with cheers and competition, the team solidified plans and identified priority areas for enhancement.
In this photo album, every frame reveals a compelling truth: the journey toward Palarong Pambansa 2026 is fueled not only by preparation but also by purpose. It is the same spirit that comforts ailing teachers in the morning and inspects playing fields by afternoon; the same heart that beats for both the caregivers and the competitors of the Caraga Region.
As Bayugan City and DepEd Caraga continue their preparations, the road to May 2026 grows brighter, marked by collaboration, dedication, and a shared belief in the power of sports to uplift an entire nation.
