DINGRAS, ILOCOS NORTE, May 20, 2025 — In a vibrant and meaningful display of camaraderie, culture, and culinary creativity, the members of the 4th Regional Management Committee (RMANCOM) lit up meeting with a uniquely Filipino tradition—the “boodle fight”—turning an ordinary meal into a symbol of unity and appreciation.

That meeting on May 16, 2025, at the Teacher Development Center in Butuan City was no ordinary gathering—it was capped off with an extraordinary feast.

Meticulously laid out and stretching across long tables, the food was arranged to spell out the words: “CARAGA REGION GOES TO ILOCOS” — each letter made from iconic Filipino food staples. Fried chicken steamed rice sculpted into perfect curves and corners, with fried chicken highlighting the contour of each letter, while colorful stir-fried shrimp, pancit, barbecue, pinakbet, lumpia, lechon, dired fish, talbos, boiled eggplant, watermelon, corn, and mango filled out the rest of the phrase. It was a strikingly both a visual and culinary feast, both literal and symbolic—an edible announcement of Caraga’s overwhelming enthusiasm and gratitude for being in the beautiful and abundant Ilocos Region.

Although the term “boodle fight” is not standard in most English dictionaries, it is commonly used and understood in the Philippines. While it leaves enough room for fun discussions as to its correct spelling, this term serves a testament to the Filipino creativity and linguistic adaptability. More importantly, it refers to a Filipino military-style meal where food is served on banana leaves and eaten with bare hands, typically shared in a group to promote camaraderie.

The boodle fight at the regional office was a highlight of the meeting, echoing Caraga’s excitement as it prepares for its participation in three prestigious national events: the Palarong Pambansa 2025 in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, and the National Festival of Talents (NFOT) and National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

“We didn’t just come here to discuss plans—we came here to celebrate our journey, our culture, and the friendships that grow through shared experiences,” said Regional Director Maria Ines C. Asuncion, who led the delegation and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the host region. “This boodle fight reflects the heart of Caraga: creative, collaborative, and deeply respectful of our host communities.”

The setting itself made the celebration even more memorable. The Caraga delegation already felt right at home, anticipating the warm welcomed by the hospitality and richness of the northern region.

The regional management committee family took their sumptuous lunch "kamayan" style, using their hands, further deepening the sense of kinship and breaking down formalities—hallmarks of the Filipino boodle fight tradition. As the food disappeared and laughter echoed across the venue, one thing became clear: Caraga’s presence in Ilocos is not just about representation—it’s about relationship.

The boodle fight didn’t just feed the body—it fed the soul. Through this cultural gesture, Caraga Region honored the warmth of Ilocos hospitality and joyfully reaffirmed its commitment to excellence and unity in the upcoming national events.

And with full hearts and full bellies, the delegation left the table ready to go the distance—from Caraga to Ilocos—proud, prepared, and inspired.
