In the persistent clatter of sticks on sticks, there exists a coach-athlete journey as enduring and resilient as the weapons they wield. Meet the guardian and warrior in the world of Arnis, a sport deeply rooted in Filipino heritage.
Sir Eldrige Troy Go from Ampayon Central Elementary School has shaped the future of Arnis in Caraga region especially, in the Division of Butuan City. For nearly a decade, he has been a beacon of discipline, resilience, and inspiration in the stick fighting arena, particularly at the prestigious Palarong Pambansa. His coaching journey is a testament to the impact a coach can have on an athlete's life.
When you first meet Coach Troy, as he is fondly called by Arnisadors, his unassuming demeanor and humble smile might mislead you. Behind that gentle exterior lies a man who has dedicated his heart and soul to the ancient martial art of Arnis. His commitment to his athletes goes beyond the sticks and the mats; he is a mentor, a confidant, and often a second father to many.
Goโs Palarong Pambansa experience began with a simple mission: to instill discipline, respect, and passion in his players. But what started as a coaching career quickly became a life-changing vocation, both for him and the athletes who came under his wing. Many Arnisadors alumni have become professionals and have continued the advocacy of Coach Troy, "My goal has always been to not just teach the techniques of Arnis but to instill values of discipline, hard work, perseverance, and respect," says Go. "These are the qualities that truly define a champion."
One fortunate Arnisador who has risen to prominence under his tutelage is Daryl Arnopia, a grade 6 pupil of the same school where Coach Troy teaches. Daryl first walked into Coach Troy's screening as a timid 10-year-old, unsure of his abilities and shy about his potential for he was only enticed by a classmate to join the try-out.
In a year under Coach Troyโs watchful eye, Daryl transformed into a fearless and fierce competitor who became a champion in two consecutive regional meets and eventually proceeded to Palarong Pambansa 2023 in Marikina City where he bagged bronze. Daryl vowed to achieve gold in this yearโs national sports tilt before he starts to 7th Grade next school year. โPaningkamotan nako nga makauli ko nga makakuha pa ug labaw sa bronze,โ the young Arnisador shared.
Coach Troy's journey has not been without its challenges. Balancing a day job as a Grade 6 adviser with after class training sessions, the emotional toll of pushing young athletes to their limits, and the rigorous demands of coaching require an extraordinary level of dedication. He often sacrifices his weekends and holidays, spending countless hours strategizing and refining his training programs. Financial constraints have also been a significant hurdle; there have been times when Coach Troy has used his savings to ensure his athletes have the necessary equipment and resources. โKada Palaro [Pambansa], mao sab tig renew ug loan para magasto sa mga bata,โ he jokingly shared. Whether it was purchasing equipment, paying for transportation, or even providing meals, his dedication never wavered. He often remarked, "The success of my athletes is my reward."
On the other hand, Daryl faced obstacles along the way. There were countless hours of grueling training, moments of doubt, and numerous sacrifices. Yet, through it all, Coach Troy remained a pillar of strength and motivation. "Gitudluan mi niya ug perseverance, hard work, ug dili mu give up. Nagpasalamat mi kay wala mi niya pasagdi," Daryl said.
Both of them reminisced about the opportunities they seized in joining competitions outside the Department of Education. The monetary reward won was used to sustain the training expenses. With this, Daryl was able to buy his phone for educational use.
"Seeing my athletes succeed, watching them grow not just as sportsmen but as individuals, makes every sacrifice worthwhile," Coach Troy reflects. "It's not about the accolades for me; it's about their journey and the person they become through it," he shared with a smile.
Today, as they continue their journey, Coach Troy and Daryl remain an inspiration to many. Their story is a testament to the power of dedication, the importance of mentorship, and the transformative impact of sports. It's a reminder that with the right guidance and unwavering perseverance, dreams can indeed become reality.
