I have spent my life struggling to survive because I am an orphan. My Mother died when I was around three years old, while my father was nowhere. I am the youngest of six children, raised by my grandmother with her meager income derived from making mats or โ€œbanigโ€ made of โ€œtikogโ€ grass. She lovingly cared for me, and I felt the need to help her with the expenses. Hence, as early as seven years old, I learned to fish. In addition, I did heavy household chores even as I assisted my grandmother in her small business. I had no time to party because I had to work to earn a living - even during Christmas. The irony is that during the most joyful time of the year, I got self-absorbed in my plight, sad, and often cried. As my grandmaโ€™s condition deteriorated, she, just like Mom, left me alone. Then I found myself wandering around, constantly searching for a place to stay, looking for friends to share my burdens. My elementary peers and teachers can attest to my childhood struggles as they saw me bullied for my faded uniform, broken zippers, and oversized shoes. When I realized nobody could support my high school education, I decided to work as a houseboy in Surigao City for four years. But, at 11, I experienced physical abuse. It pushed me to the streets, begging for food from strangers. I acknowledged my dire situation, and I pitied myself. I felt insecure and found myself crying all the time. But, during these dark times, something lit the fire in my heart: I decided to return to Dinagat Islands to continue my education. I had no birth certificate nor the money to take the first step. But still, I loudly heard that little voice telling me: Try again! I was sixteen when the REESNHS admitted me as a first-year high school student. I was too old compared to my classmates, but I must continue. With little or no support from my relatives, I survived four years of high school by working part-time for my teachers. I usually leave home as early as 5:00 am and go home as late as midnight. Naturally, a few of my relatives misunderstood my intentions. They even told me I would not go anywhere nor amount to anything. It devastated me emotionally. However, despite all these, I dedicated myself to finishing what I had started. I always believe that the road to success is rough and tough. It requires courage, hope, and determination to live the desired life. As a child whose family income falls way below the poverty line, graduating from High School was unexpected. But in 2014, I made it. I graduated from High School. I was the class valedictorian. They called it a miracle. But I called it determination, passion, and hard work. Indeed, so many people have influenced my life. I thank Tita Mercy and Tito Willy - the community development workers - who were on a mission during my troubled times. They taught me things that opened doors for my college education. They introduced me to UP. I graduated from UP with a degree in Political Science in 2019. Without these experiences and the help of the people around me, I would not have become a professional working for the Department of Education as a Project Development Officer I of Dinagat Islands Division. My life makes more sense now as my position allows me to help poor but deserving students develop their skills, mold their attitudes to become good citizens, motivate them to serve the community and give them a chance to live a better life by going the distance.
