As a young athlete, I often dreamed of the Palarong Pambansa. I would imagine meeting new faces, playing on a rubber volleyball court, being away from Bislig for a while, receiving exclusive perks for athletes, and, of course, feeling the pride of entering a national competition.

Palarong Pambansa is the largest annual multi-sport event in the Philippines, involving student-athletes from elementary and high schools across the country. The event, first held in 1948, was originally known as the Bureau of Public Schools-Interscholastic Athletics Association Games (BPISAA) and was renamed Palarong Pambansa in 1974.(http://palarongpambansa.deped.gov.ph/2023-palarong-pambansa/)

The journey began on June 27, 2024, through a regional memorandum posted on the DepEd Caraga website. When I received the confirmation, I knew this was the chance to fulfill my dream, and without a doubt, I embraced it with optimism.

Joining the Palarong Pambansa team this year is an unexpected opportunity. I find myself not as an athlete but as part of the communication and publication team for the Caraga Athletic delegation, which will stay in Lahug Elementary School in Cebu City from July 1-18, 2024.

Upon arriving in Cebu City, everything felt nostalgic. Cebu was my home from 1998 until December of 2002, and my heart couldn't contain the happiness and gratitude. More than seeing the faces of 471 Caraga athletes filled with excitement, I, a teacher, am healing my inner child.

For many, like me, the Palarong Pambansa is a dreamโ€”a goal that seems unattainable. Yet here I am, part of the delegation. My role in the communication and publication team allows me to see the Palaro from a different perspective. Instead of wearing a volleyball jersey and lacing up my playing shoes, I carry a laptop, a camera, and a mission: to capture the essence of this celebrated event, the athletesโ€™ stories, struggles, and triumphs.

The Palarong Pambansa is more than just a sporting event. It is not just about winning medals and breaking records. It is a celebration of dreams, perseverance, and youthful ambition. For the athletes, it represents the peak of their athletic ambition, a chance to shine on a national stage. As someone who once dreamed of this very moment, being part of the event in any capacity is an honor beyond wordsโ€”it is a dream come true.
