Organized by the Education Support Services Division (ESSD) headed by Dr. Edmund Mendoza, in collaboration with the focal persons of the Disaster Preparedness Response Program (DPRP) and the School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP), the training equipped school heads, canteen managers, Project Development Officers (PDOs), and Administrative Officers (AOs) with essential knowledge and skills in food handling, preparation, sanitation, and storage. Regional Nutritionist-Dietitian II Rena Grace G. Tul-id, Regional Nutritionist-Dietitian II, facilitated the activities.
The four-day training was participated in by 115 DepEd personnel from the divisions of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Bayugan City, and Cabadbaran City. It featured expert resource speakers from DOST Caragaโs Food Safety Team, including Mary Grace M. Sabuero and Reynalyn Abao, who covered topics such as general manufacturing practices, personal hygiene, cross contamination, food safety hazards, and food contact surfaces. Participants engaged in interactive activities like role-playing, the โHygiene Hero Challenge,โ and quizzes to reinforce learning.
A highlight of the training was the orientation on the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Schools (WinS) Program, delivered by Dr. Anna Liza A. Lerio, Regional WinS Focal Person. She emphasized the importance of integrating food safety with hygiene education and compliance with the Three Star Approach framework. This was followed by Tul-idโs presentation on the key provisions of DepEd Order No. 8, s. 2007, which outlines the operation and management of school canteens, and DepEd Order No. 13, s. 2017, which sets the policy on healthy food and beverage choices in schools and DepEd offices. Participants actively engaged in the discussion, raising questions that Tul-id addressed with clarity and thorough explanations.
This training reinforced DepEd Caragaโs commitment to promoting safe, nutritious, and learner-friendly food environments in schools. By enhancing technical competencies and fostering a culture of safety, the region continues to prioritize the health and well-being of its learners.
