Situated on a 40,000-square-meter campus, Calaitan ES has transformed part of its land into a thriving banana plantation to help address pupil hunger, allowing learners to focus on their studies without worrying about their next meal. The plantation also contributes to school activities by supporting the preparation of banana-based meals for students and guests.
The programโs core objective is to provide direct support to pupils at risk of dropping out, particularly those residing in remote areas. It also aims to improve attendance among learners who struggle with food access while generating sustainable resources to support the schoolโs feeding program and hospitality needs.
For the year 2024, the banana production showed irregular trends with their sales. From June 2024 to May 2025, January marked the highest banana sales this yearโthe schoolโs plantation demonstrates both high yield and strong community relevance.
Calaitan ES has proudly maintained a zero dropout rate for five consecutive years. The availability of fresh, nutritious bananas has greatly improved the health and well-being of learners, contributing to increased energy levels and better classroom focus. โThe children love eating them, and itโs amazing to see the impact it has had on their energy levels and focus in class,โ one of the teachers noted.
The program has also led to a noticeable decline in absenteeism and tardiness, as more learners are now eager to attend school, knowing that a healthy meal awaits them upon arrival.
The visit of RD Asuncion and SDS Albis highlighted the meaningful impact of the โGasa Hong Sagingโ program, demonstrating how agricultural practices, community support, and education can come together to uplift learners and cultivate a more nurturing school environment.
