BUTUAN CITY, February 10, 2025—In a significant step toward enhancing early literacy and numeracy among young learners, the Division of Butuan City successfully conducted a comprehensive upskilling program for K to 3 teachers. This initiative centered on the Early Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (ELLN) framework and the Science of Reading (SOR).

From February 03 to 07, 2025, a dedicated group of 24 Master Teachers from 10 districts participated in this five-day training. These educators, recognized for their commitment to foundational learning, engaged in intensive sessions to refine their teaching methodologies and acquire evidence-based reading strategies.

Mrs. Loinda S. Guerta, Division Reading Coordinator for Secondary Education, spearheaded the training. She underscored the critical importance of early literacy in fostering lifelong learning. Mrs. Guerta shared best practices for reading interventions and assessment tools that align with the Science of Reading. Ma’am Marie Joy M. Intong, EPS in Filipino, Kindergarten, and Private Schools, also offered valuable insights into literacy development and effective instructional strategies tailored for young learners. Mrs. Marylou M. Recososa, Principal IV of West I and Division Reading Coordinator for Elementary discussed Oral Language Development and the essential components of the Big Six of Reading.

Participants engaged in hands-on workshops, collaborative activities, and interactive discussions, all aimed at strengthening research-based approaches to teaching reading and numeracy. The program highlighted the importance of structured literacy instruction, phonemic awareness, and comprehension strategies in establishing a solid reading foundation for early learners.

This upskilling initiative reaffirms the Butuan City Division’s commitment to delivering high-quality education. The program aims to nurture young minds and lay a robust groundwork for academic success by equipping teachers with the necessary tools and knowledge. As these educators return to their respective schools, they are expected to implement and share their newfound insights, positively impacting thousands of young learners throughout the division.
