Spanning three days, the training began on August 26 for School Heads and continued until August 28 for Schools Division Trainers, equipping participants with strategies to roll out the nationwide ARAL Program, which targets learning recovery and improved literacy among Caraga learners.
The highlight was the presentation of Mr. Bernabe Linog, Chief of the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD), who tackled the alarming state of literacy in the country. He pointed out that Filipino learners lag behind very early in their academic journey, with most Grade 3 students already two to three years behind curriculum expectations in reading.
Citing a forthcoming UNICEF study, Linog noted that even before the COVID-19 pandemic, many Grade 4 learners were already at Grade 3 level or lower in math and literacy, and nearly half were performing only at Grades 1 to 2 levels. The pandemic further widened these gaps, leaving learners 2โ3 years behind expected proficiency levels.
Despite these challenges, Linog underscored that the ARAL Program is designed as a solution, enabling learners to strengthen foundational skills and recover lost competencies.
The morning sessions also included a presentation by Maria Consuelo Jamera, Education Program Supervisor, on the critical roles and responsibilities of School Heads in implementing the ARAL-Reading Program.
In the afternoon sessions, Luz Sandra R. Fernandez guided participants through โThe ARAL Learners and the Teacher as ARAL Tutor,โ while Nurse II Hazel Ladroma conducted an orientation on Vision Screening as part of ARALโs learner support strategies to ensure visual health among learners.
By its conclusion, the training had equipped both School Heads and Division Trainers with knowledge and tools to strengthen ARALโs implementation in schools across the region.
The activity stands as a testament to DepEd Caragaโs firm commitment to learning recovery and ensuring that every learner in the region can catch up and succeed.
