The Palarong Pambansa 2024 officially commenced on July 9 with a grand opening ceremony that dazzled more than 18,000 attendees at the Cebu City Sports Center. This marked the second time in 30 years that Cebu City has hosted the national sporting event.
The festivities started with the "Parada ng mga Atleta" (Parade of Athletes), a vibrant procession winding through the city's main streets. Dressed in their vibrant regional colors, the athletes, coaches, trainers, and team officials took center stage in synchronization for the โSaludo March.โ
As the nationโs sports heroes entered the arena and greeted the excited spectators with waves and smiles, the audience erupted in applause and shouted for their regional bets.
Following the introduction and presentation of the different delegations, Cebuano idols showcased their talents in singing and dancing while the crowd waited for the guest of honor.
The presence of the nation's executive leader added prestige to the opening rites. In his speech, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. underscored the importance of sportsmanship and unity. Furthermore, the President remarked that the Palarong Pambansa is "more than just a platform for discovering talents," highlighting its role in fostering national pride.
Marcos also had the honor of lighting the ceremonial torch, which he then passed to former professional basketball star and acting city Vice-Mayor, Dondon Hontiveros, for the torch relay.
As the evening progressed after the cauldron was ignited, the atmosphere grew more electrifying with performances from the Pinoy-Pop (P-POP) group Alamat, the award-winning Cebuana singer Sheryn Regis, and over a thousand dancers from various dance troupes and universities, vividly showcasing Cebu's rich cultural heritage. The breathtaking fireworks display that lit up the Cebu night sky capped off the evening, leaving the crowd in awe.
With a week full of competitions across various sports, the Palarong Pambansa 2024 promises to be an exhilarating and memorable experience for all.
