To enhance the quality of language instruction in schools, the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Bislig City spearheaded an upskilling program for English teachers and education leaders from February 26 to 28, 2025, at Kuya Dong's Restaurant, Mangagoy, Bislig City. This initiative aimed to equip participants with innovative strategies and best practices to elevate English proficiency among learners.

Initial Thoughts on the Session

I am truly grateful and honored to have been part of the training, "Division Upskilling of English Teachers and Education Leaders in Language Instruction." This opportunity allowed me to refine my teaching strategies, gain fresh insights, and connect with fellow English teachers from the Bislig City Division who share the same passion for language instruction. Learning from expert speakers and exploring innovative approaches will undoubtedly enhance my effectiveness as an educator, empowering me to inspire and guide my students toward language mastery. I am excited to apply what I have learned in my classroom.

My Understanding of Communicative Competence

Initially, I thought communicative competence meant simply speaking fluently and correctly. However, I soon realized it encompasses much more: using language appropriately in various social contexts, organizing thoughts coherently, and adapting communication strategies as needed. This deeper understanding reinforced the importance of teaching linguistic skills while also building students' confidence to express themselves effectively.

I learned that communicative competence consists of four key components: grammatical, sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic competence. For example, during a workshop exercise, we practiced role-playing different social scenarios, which highlighted the need for students to adapt their language use based on context. As a teacher, I play a vital role in helping students develop these skills by creating interactive learning opportunities, guiding them in articulating their thoughts clearly, and encouraging them to communicate confidently.

Relevance to My Teaching Experience

This topic strongly aligns with my beliefs as a teacher. Throughout my 17 years in the profession—five years in a private school and 12 years in DepEd, transitioning from SDO Muntinlupa City to Bislig City Division—I have witnessed students struggle with grammar and expressing their ideas appropriately. For instance, I recall a student who could write beautifully but hesitated to speak in class due to fear of making mistakes. This has reinforced my belief that language instruction should focus on real-life application and confidence-building. I strive to foster a supportive classroom environment where students feel encouraged to express themselves without fear.

Reflections on the Training

The topic of communicative competence is both interesting and highly relevant, providing a deeper understanding of how language functions in academic and social settings, which is essential for effective teaching. While addressing students' diverse communication skills can be challenging, mastering communicative competence is key to meaningful learning and real-world communication.

Gratitude and Appreciation

This training would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of those behind the scenes. Every detail was thoughtfully arranged, from the well-prepared meals that energized us to the comfortable venue that fostered a productive learning environment. A round of applause to the staff and crew of Kuya Dong's Restaurant!

Most importantly, my heartfelt gratitude goes to the organizers, speakers, and facilitators led by Dr. Rhoda M. Delos Santos, whose expertise and passion made this training insightful and inspiring. Their efforts have enriched our learning experience and strengthened our commitment to effective language instruction.

Lastly, I wholeheartedly thank God for the incredible success of this transformative three-day training seminar on upskilling English teachers in language instruction. His divine guidance and boundless grace made this enriching experience possible, allowing us to learn, grow, and connect with passionate educators. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity, and the insights and skills we have gained will impact our teaching and empower our students to thrive.
